Overview

Joby aviation is seeking a passionate development engineer to join our additive engineering team. This role will support the optimization of current additive manufacturing processes while simultaneously advancing the team into new materials and techniques. The candidate will be comfortable across multiple disciplines, including materials science, manufacturing, and statistics.

Responsibilities

  •  Work in a hands-on environment to develop and optimize laser powder bed fusion process parameters and post-processing conditions to enhance performance, quality, consistency, and efficiency
    Design, analyze, and document experiments to develop and qualify parameter sets across existing and new materials and platforms
  • Collaborate with designers to identify materials and performance needs for new applications and mature manufacturing readiness levels for production
  • Develop and author internal process specifications and support manufacturing and quality to ensure process conformity
  • Work with external partners and suppliers to ensure they meet project requirements and intent and move fast!

Required

  • B.S. in materials science, mechanical, manufacturing, physics, or other relevant engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant experience 
  • Experience in process development and material qualification for additive manufacturing
  • In-depth knowledge of statistical tools and concepts
  • Knowledge of laser powder bed fusion equipment architecture and laser-powder interactions
  • Knowledge of metallic materials and characterization methods
  • Familiarity with print preparation tools and build file execution
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to manage and self-prioritize multiple assignments across short- and long-term deadlines
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced dynamic environment

Desired

  • Advanced degree in relevant discipline
  • Knowledge of metal powders, their handling, and characterization
  • Familiarity with post processing techniques for additively manufactured parts
  • Experience in controlled/certified environments (AS9100 or ISO9000)
  • Demonstrated experience managing external development projects on tight timelines
  • Experience in authoring and revising materials and process specifications

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $113,900 - $187,400/annually. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
