Joby Overview

Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.

Overview

We are looking for a passionate individual to lead and manage the integrated flight simulator team. The successful candidate will play a key leadership role in a small, fast-moving team responsible for the architecture, design, and implementation of a robust, deterministic, and highly scalable software simulation framework. They will work closely with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, data scientists, pilots, and other stakeholders to create and improve one of the highest fidelity flight simulators.

This role also involves performing individual contributor work as a C++ software engineer. As the team is small, the leadership responsibilities should represent half of the job effort on average making this role perfect for leaders who wish to stay close to the code and keep their engineering skills fresh.

The team consists of talented engineers with OOP C++ development skills who can design and build a high-fidelity simulator that will help drive the development, verification, and certification activities for a one-of-a-kind fully electric aircraft.

Responsibilities

In this role you will:

  • Focus on leading the Integrated Vehicle Simulator (IVS) software development team towards feature completion through planning and scheduling of effort. This includes guiding sprint planning activities as well as disseminating priorities.
  • Collaborate and touch base with stakeholders to ensure scope, schedules, and priorities are well understood.
  • Develop and manage a team of engineers to achieve company objectives by providing technical direction, monitoring progress, problem solving, and leading your team's professional development (e.g., performance evaluations, promotion management, routine one-on-one developmental conversations) and mentor them on performance.
  • Participate in software design reviews to provide input on functional requirements, product designs, schedules, or potential problems.
  • Work with a range of software, processor in the loop, and hardware in the loop simulators representative of the eVTOL system.
  • Become the simulator product expert and support software verification, devops, and other software engineering teams with their simulator needs.
  • Lead efforts to design, execute, and maintain supporting documentation for simulator usage.
  • Perform software engineering tasks with the same care and consideration expected from the rest of the team.

Required

  • Experience as a team lead, manager, or mentor of software engineers.
  • University degree in computer science or computer engineering and 7+ years industry experience. An advanced degree and 5+ years industry experience will also be considered.
  • Practical knowledge of object-oriented programming methodology and multi-layered system architectures.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of C++ and knowledge of multi-threaded systems.
  • Experience with modern integrated development environments and debuggers.
  • Basic understanding of version control technologies.
  • Exposure to python.

Candidate should be an energetic, meticulous, self-motivated person with an adamant belief in the importance of product quality. If you love working with leading-edge technology, have passion for innovation and safety, and a hands-on approach this is the job for you.

Desired

  • A positive attitude and a passion for Aerospace!
  • A personable approach to stakeholder management.
  • Willingness to be flexible and learn new technologies.
  • Experience in building schedules, Gantt charts, or road-maps pertaining to software development.
  • Experience with running sprint planning exercises.
  • Knowledge of needs analysis, requirements analysis, and resource/capacity planning.

Please still apply if you don’t meet all items in the desired section! Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. We are dedicated to building a diverse and effective workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
