Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized, passionate leader to join our actuator testing team. The team lead test engineer has responsibility for laboratory tests of flight critical servo actuation components and subsystems for electric VTOL aircraft. The data collected during these tests will inform the company’s hardware design efforts and pave the way to type certification and beyond. The Joby Aviation team is made up of extremely talented, hardworking, proactive, and hands-on individuals, operating in a very fast-paced and rewarding environment. We are looking to expand this team with like-minded individuals looking to make a mark in the transportation industry.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of engineers responsible for the design, build, and operation of actuator test venues, setups and laboratories. 
  • Collaborate with design engineers and area leads to ensure functions and failures are accurately replicated in the test venue by quantifying hardware and software attributes that affect accuracy of the test venue. 
  • Deliver test results for company development, validation, and verification activities, safety of flight tests, as well as progress test venues through FAA Conformity and Certification test events. 
  • Develop test capabilities, test processes, and test strategies which enable high quality and efficient testing of Joby products. 
  • Support the development of test engineers and test technicians via on the job training, mentoring, and formal training and career development support.   
  • Review test plans, procedure and data and offer detailed feedback on improvements and technical approaches.

Required

  • Hands-on attitude and willingness to support active testing activities including lab test and test setup 
  • Strong analytical background with expertise in at least one relevant discipline and strong cross discipline engineering skills 
  • Deep knowledge of relevant test and aerospace industry standards and equipment 
  • B.S. in mechanical engineering or another relevant discipline  
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills  
  • 8+ years relevant experience in aerospace, testing or related industry, or Master’s + 6 yrs

Desired

  • M.S./Ph.D. in relevant discipline  
  • 2+ years team leadership experience 
  • Direct experience with industrial test laboratory environments 
  • Direct experience with data acquisition, preferably National Instruments LabView and cDAQ / cRIO 
  • Direct experience with CAD, preferably Dassault Systems Catia & Enovia 
  • Hands-on machine shop skills using lathe, mill, welder, and other machine shop equipment 
  • Experience with high voltage electronics 
  • Experience testing aircraft mechanical systems 
  • Aircraft homebuilding, rapid prototyping or aerospace startup experience is a plus

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $148,600 - $198,200/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
