Overview

Working as a Noise & Vibration Test Engineer, you will support Joby’s efforts to develop solutions for noise and vibration problems which arise throughout the development, certification, and commercial operation of the S4 aircraft. You will participate in cross-functional teams including Flight Controls, Powertrain, Flight Test, Airframe and more. Through the interaction with these teams, you will proactively seek out opportunities where noise or vibration testing is needed and then plan and execute the testing as required. The position is based at Joby’s headquarters in Santa Cruz, CA. Remote working is not available.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform noise and/or vibration tests on various aircraft subsystems during their operation including cooling fans, propeller test stands, environmental control systems (ECS), among others.
  • Perform component modal testing on aircraft systems including propeller blades, aircraft control surfaces and powertrain components, among others.
  • Assist with the setup and execution of full aircraft Ground Vibration Test (GVT) modal test campaigns.
  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise (SME) support for Flight Test operations including real-time monitoring of aircraft vibration behavior during flight from within the Ground Control Station (GCS), along with post-flight data reviews.
  • Setup the data acquisition system for aircraft flyover noise measurements, perform the data acquisition and perform all required post-flight data analysis.

Required

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering & 2+ years relevant experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with acoustics and vibration fundamentals.
  • Knowledge and experience with noise & vibration measurement systems including sensor selection, sensor placement, signal conditioning and Digital Signal Processing (DSP).
  • Demonstrated high level of curiosity, quality and attention to detail in daily efforts
  • Exhibited high levels of ESP (Energy, Stamina, and Passion) in career efforts and daily work.
  • Demonstrated self starter: Able to proactively identify problems and develop solutions with little supervision.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent problem solving and written & verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to work from all Joby CA facilities as required including Santa Cruz, San Carlos, Marina and Edwards Air Force Base.

Desired

  • M.S. in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering with an academic focus on acoustics or vibration.
  • Knowledge and experience with Siemens Testlab data acquisition and analysis system, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of and experience with RTCA DO-160 vibration standard.
  • Knowledge and Experience with scripting languages (MATLAB, Python, etc.).
  • Knowledge and Experience with NI LabView data acquisition and analysis.
  • Knowledge and Experience with vibroacoustic simulation tools (FEA, SEA, BEM).

 

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $91,500 - $151,900/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
