Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized and experienced individual to join our Testing Team as the Powertrain and Electronics (P&E) Test Lab Operations Manager at our San Carlos facility. The objective of the P&E Equipment Test Lab is to support the Joby programs through development and certification testing of powertrain and electronics equipment and systems. This role's main responsibility is to plan, organize, and optimize the test and maintenance workflows to accomplish P&E Test lab functions in a safe and timely manner, to support Joby needs. 

Responsibilities

  • Ensure P&E Lab Operations strategy is aligned with the Testing Team strategy to meet company goals 
  • Understand the needs of Joby Development, Company, and FAA certification test processes and ensure that the Lab can support these.  This may include implementation of principles like 5S.
  • Manage test execution readiness strategies for the lab, focusing on: 
  • Lab facility readiness for testing, including compliance with internal Safety guidelines and OSHA guidelines. 
  • Lab equipment readiness for testing, including equipment procurement, scheduling, operating procedure development, maintenance, and calibration
  • Lab personnel readiness for testing, including hiring, tasking, and training
  • Test execution best practices, including test article management, test instrumentation,  test setup configuration control, test log creation and storage
  • Ensure Lab team supports test flow process in JIRA
  • Act as Testing Team liaison with Joby Facilities team on repairs, growth planning, lab layout management, etc. 
  • Act as Testing Team liaison with Joby Shipping and Receiving team
  • Manage the Test Operations team, with a focus on: 
  • Management of Lab personnel including career growth planning, skills growth planning, and conducting of performance reviews 
  • Support on-site visits/tours/special requests as needed

Required

  • Prior experience as Lab Manager or equivalent role, with experience in building and managing a team of technicians and Lab Supervisors, while maintaining adequate operational safety
  • Experience with test development in an R&D environment
  • Knowledge of Laboratory testing methods, specifically environmental testing as per IEC/MIL/RTCA DO-160
  • Strong organizational and process improvement skills
  • Experience in JIRA/Confluence or similar tools
  • Strong written, and verbal skills, demonstrated in development of operating procedures to be implemented by others. 
  • High attention to detail
  • Minimum of: Bachelor's degree +2yrs; Advanced degree + several practical university projects;
    or 5-7+ years of relevant skilled experience, regardless of education level

Desired

  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements for industrial Lab environments 
  • Experience with failure analysis techniques (non-destructive) and processes (FRACAS, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with test instrumentation (accelerometers, thermocouples, strain gauges, flowmeters, load cells, etc.) 
  • Experience with LabView for Data Acquisition and potentially automation (invoking desired equipment functions at different conditions)
  • Experience operating with high voltage
  • Experience operating with Lithium Ion batteries

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $116,200 - $154,900/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
