Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate individual to join our Powertrain and Electronics team as a Senior/Staff Automation Controls Engineer in San Carlos, CA. As part of this team, you will be responsible for full-stack design of electrical hardware and controls software for custom assembly and test machines that build Joby S4 aircraft. This position requires a relentless drive for engineering excellence and the ability to find balance between complex competing objectives and priorities. Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical and software system development for manufacturing equipment from proof of concept to low volume production
  • Work closely with Design and Manufacturing engineers to develop equipment that meets product and process requirements
  • Work closely with Test engineers to develop first-generation manufacturing test equipment
  • Apply engineering first principles throughout the equipment design process to create cost-effective implementations of complex electrical test equipment used in manufacturing
  • Develop full designs, drawing packages, BOMs and diagrams for the electrical and controls systems of manufacturing equipment
  • Design electrical systems compliant to NEC, NFPA and UL508A requirements
  • Procure custom and off-the-shelf hardware, managing suppliers on an as needed basis
  • Design, write, and debug object-oriented PLC software in Structured Text IEC 61131-3 (Twincat)
  • Create HMI and data collection tools using Ignition (Perspective)
  • Create software solutions for communicating with specialized hardware and integrating data into databases and data visualization platforms using API’s
  • Manage code using Github
  • Lead equipment integration of designs and ensure that the systems meet initial design requirements, while remaining flexible to the constraints of a fast-moving workplace
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing and electrical test equipment

Required

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering or a relevant discipline
  • 6+ years of work experience in relevant industry
  • Proficiency in PLC programming using Structured Text IEC 61131-3 (Twincat), Python, and Ignition
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to work with many different people and manage working relationships
  • Proficiency in electrical schematic creation (Autocad Electrical)
  • Experience in control system design of automated manufacturing equipment
  • Experience in software system architecture and data acquisition methods for manufacturing equipment connecting PLCs, SCADA, and MES
  • System designs utilizing mechatronic and pneumatic components
  • Hands on experience building and wiring electrical panels
  • Experience with project execution from initial concept development through to final commissioning

Desired

  • 8+ years of work experience in relevant industry
  • Experience with Beckhoff Hardware
  • Experience with electrical schematic design using AutoCAD Electrical
  • Knowledge of servo/drive system design and integration a plus
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA development and integration using Ignition (Perspective)
  • Experience developing software across multiple platforms using various languages and industrial automation protocols
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA and UL508A

EEO

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $123,400 - $205,000 per year salary. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
