Joby Overview

Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service

Overview

As a Coating and Assembly Manufacturing Engineer you will play a key role in the scale up of Joby's high volume aircraft production line. You will help the Joby team develop and implement the processes, tools, and ideas required to rapidly and scale up paint operations for an FAA certified aircraft. This role will require you to not only develop tools and processes, but also contribute to the overall vision of a flying rideshare service by thinking beyond the confines of the traditional aerospace industry and re-imagining the possibilities of aircraft manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and implement paint and coating processes for Joby aircraft assemblies and components
  • Make key contributions to the development of Joby's high-output production system that will produce aircraft at rates that have not yet been achieved in the aerospace industry
  • Seek out and implement new manufacturing technologies and methods capable of dramatically accelerating assembly production rates. For example paint robotics, alternative coating processes, reusable masking solutions, efficient paint racking systems, and booth loading and batching.
  • Collaborate with Joby's partners at Toyota to develop highly effective production tools and systems
  • Author clear, explicit, and easy-to-follow manufacturing work instructions
  • Work closely with the production team on the shop floor to quickly address issues and resolve technical challenges
  • Develop and implement factory layout for future airframe production facility
  • Work with quality engineering team to conduct first article inspections, define paint QA requirements, and PFMEAs
  • Work closely with M&P engineers to define new materials and processes.
  • Lead development projects with multidisciplinary teams including design, stress, M&P, quality, tooling, production, purchasing, etc.
  • Define paint sequence and workflow for large and small airframe assemblies
  • Lead first time paint processes and provide ongoing support during factory bring up
  • Manage schedules for initial builds, identify schedule risks, and relentlessly seek opportunities to reduce timelines
  • Identify improvement opportunities company wide, specifically those related to composite manufacturing, assembly operations, and paint processes.

Required

  • B.S. in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or similar field
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience
  • Experience with mechanical design, fixture and assembly tooling design
  • Strong project management experience
  • Ability to resolve complex engineering problems through application fundamental engineering principles
  • Experience in prototype and production manufacturing
  • Proficiency in Catia, SolidWorks or similar CAD software
  • Excellent problem solving and teamwork skills while working with cross-functional teams
  • Able to work in a fast paced engineering environment and quickly adapt to changing inputs, requirements, and direction
  • Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles to identify and drive non-standard solutions to solve manufacturing constraints

Desired

  • Strong experience with composites manufacturing, coating and paint application
  • Experience with automated/robotic manufacturing systems
  • Familiarity with aerospace manufacturing, processing, and materials
  • Experience developing factory layouts and workstations
  • Experience with lean manufacturing methods and time study analysis
