Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate and driven Flight Test and Operations Engineer to join our UAE team based in Dubai. This role requires a wide range of knowledge and skills, including developing detailed flight test plans for experimental eVTOL fly-by-wire aircraft, executing testing as a crewmember, and analyzing post-test data. The role involves close collaboration with our California-based Flight Test team and preparing for early commercial operations as part of our Dubai Operations team. Previous experience and/or training as a Flight Test Engineer is required.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and execution of flight tests on an experimental eVTOL aircraft, including exhibition flights and international demonstrations in the EMEA and APAC regions.  
  • Perform flight test planning, flight test readiness reviews, flight briefs/debriefs, act as a crewmember during test execution, and perform post-flight data analysis. 
  • Work as an active member of the flight test crew, including monitoring data in real time to assure the safety and proper conduct of flight tests.
  • Report on completed tests, including reporting any observed deficiencies and findings that may impact the aircraft design.
  • Advise the flight test pilot of the nature of the data, which will inform real-time decisions affecting safety, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Develop expert-level knowledge of the systems and aircraft under test.
  • Completes administrative work associated with testing, including configuration management, squawk reporting, flight limitation management, and test card creation.
  • Assists with troubleshooting and root cause investigation of issues observed during flight testing.
  • Interfaces with flight test maintenance and engineering to inform troubleshooting and post-maintenance and return to service checks.
  • Work with local aviation regulators to obtain and maintain experimental flight permits.
  • Attend regular meetings and training sessions with the Flight Test Team based in California to maintain crew currency and to remain abreast of Joby flight test processes, procedures, and 
  • Support logistical and operations planning for UAE operations and international exhibitions as directed by the UAE Operations team
  • Participate as a member of the Operations team as Joby prepares for commercial launch in the UAE
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Required

  • Bachelor of Science (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or other technical field) degree or equivalent experience and training.
  • Previous experimental flight test experience as a Flight Test Engineer.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with colleagues across a wide range of technical disciplines. 
  • Strong technical and analytical skills. 
  • Must be able to work both independently and on a team and be able to work extended hours and travel as required. 
  • Read and speak English proficiently.
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 70% of the time to support global flight test operations and demonstrations, including travel to the U.S.A. for extended training with the California-based Flight Test Team.

Desired

  • FTE graduate of a recognized test pilot school or equivalent on the job experience. 
  • Data analysis experience using Matlab, Python or similar. 
  • Experimental flight test experience as a Flight Test Engineer, preferably including VTOL or STOVL and fly-by-wire. 
  • Initial Operational Test & Evaluation experience. 
  • Familiarity with FAA Order 4040.26C.
