Joby Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Overview

Working as a Data Scientist in the Data Analytics core team you will be responsible for developing analytical tools and reporting results from numerous tests and flight operations, then improving software architectures of prototype analytics tools into production while supporting Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI / CD) principles within the team. You should be able to work cohesively with subject matter experts and distill requirements into simple, testable and maintainable software. You will also need to work closely with your analytics colleagues across a broad set of highly technical disciplines who depend on data to architect and optimize analytics solutions. The ideal candidate is energetic, has a positive attitude, is flexible and excited about learning and using new technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with data scientists, other cross-functional teams and subject matter experts on software engineering projects
  • Conduct data analysis and interpret sensor data from a number of physical processes (aircraft, simulators, reliability test equipment, subsystem tests, etc.)
  • Understand both data systems and physical systems, and have an eye for anomalies in physical test data
  • Generate dashboards for data visualization and clearly present results
  • Develop tools to process and report on data as consistently and easily as possible
  • Leverage statistics, numerical fitting methods, and visualization tools to draw conclusions
  • Develop algorithms to predict failures or the occurrence of certain events from the data
  • Comfortable navigating a quickly changing environment and willing to learn on-the-fly to obtain and define requirements
  • Stay current with advancements in software and data engineering

Required

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar field and 3+ years of relevant work experience
  • Expert-level software-engineering ability: you are able to distill requirements into simple, testable and maintainable software, provide technical guidance and design solutions for large-scale data science and automation projects
  • Strong background in data science, data analysis and visualization (algorithms, data structures, and architectures), probability, statistics, and predictive modeling
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues across multiple levels of abstraction
  • Expert object oriented programming skills in Python and data science packages such as Pandas, MATLAB etc…
  • 3 years experience with SQL databases and data modeling
  • Strong skills developing on Unix-based platforms and using shell commands
  • Experience with data pipeline architectures, ingestion, ETL, transformations, analytics, API connectors and visualization
  • Experience with GenAI LLMs and Machine Learning
  • Very familiar with git source control
  • Expert use of IDE’s for authoring, refactoring and debugging code
  • Self-starter capable of working with limited supervision and guidance
  • Experience leading projects from conception to completion
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Desired

  • Experience with distributed systems and big data tools such as Databricks, Apache Spark, etc.
  • Work experience with anomaly/outlier detection in time series data
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation, Kubernetes manifests, etc.)
  • Experience with MLOps and building machine learning pipelines for production
  • Experience with version control and CI/CD platforms, able to manage your software through its entire lifecycle (development, testing, deployment)
