Joby Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Overview

This role lives within the System Electronics Mechanical team, which serves as a crossroads of electromechanical and static/dynamic assemblies throughout the aircraft. From the hands of the pilot to the brains of the batteries and flight controls, this team is responsible for designing the pilot inceptors, air data probe, and numerous computer assemblies across the vehicle. We’re seeking a passionate, hands-on, and fundamentally strong engineer to own designs from concept to certification, work cross-functionally to optimize vehicle-level solutions, and ensure the safe, lightweight, and reliable delivery of electromechanical assemblies to the aircraft.

Responsibilities

Own designs from concept to certification, including:

  • Rapid prototyping and development testing
  • Mass optimization, stress analysis, and thermal analysis
  • Troubleshooting issues in manufacturing, testing, and in the field
  • Driving system safety, reliability, requirements, and integration considerations
  • Designing for manufacturability and cost at the component and assembly levels

Professional Skills

  • Communicate design risks, complex concepts, and data clearly and honestly
  • Collaborate effectively and with humility across multiple areas of expertise

Required

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience, depending on education
  • Proficiency with CAD (e.g., CATIA, NX, SolidWorks) for complex surfacing, part design, and assemblies
  • Strong fundamentals in statics, dynamics, heat transfer, and materials science
  • Familiarity with aerodynamics and fluid dynamics; ability to perform or interpret CFD (e.g., Ansys, Star-CCM+)

Desired

  • Familiarity with DO-160G mechanical requirements for aerospace applications
  • Familiarity with both low-voltage and high-voltage electromechanical designs
  • Experience with finite element analysis (e.g., Abaqus, Ansys, SolidWorks)
  • Experience with thermal/icing environments and heated probe design

Please still apply if you don’t meet all items in the desired section! Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. We are dedicated to building a diverse and effective workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
