Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate Mass Properties Engineer who believes in the ability of urban air mobility to positively impact our cities. This role is an exciting position within the flight physics engineering team, as it allows for the engineer to interface with many disciplines within the company and assume a major role in the mass properties management of aircraft. Joby aircraft products are designed safely, quickly and efficiently, meaning attention to detail is critical. The engineer will have experience working in depth with aircraft mass properties, mass distribution, weight and balance, and development of mass database tools and methods, as well as a focus on fleet management and working closely with aircraft manufacturing and certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and maintaining the aircraft mass properties data including weight, center of gravity, and moments of inertia throughout the design and certification process as needed.
  • Support aircraft builds by working with manufacturing teams to ensure as-built parts and assemblies are within weight tolerance and supported by evidence.
  • Develop tools to track and manage mass properties efforts around a growing fleet of aircraft.
  • Perform detailed mass properties analysis using classical hand calculations and advanced software tools.
  • Support the design and optimization of aircraft structures and components to meet weight targets and balance requirements.
  • Support design trade studies related to mass properties and support IPTs as needed to help track, manage and minimize mass or mass properties concerns.
  • Prepare and review aircraft weight and balance reports, certification documents, and other related documentation.
  • Coordinate with other engineering teams to ensure accurate mass properties information is integrated into the overall aircraft design.
  • Participate in aircraft ground and flight testing to validate mass properties data and gather new data.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the mass properties team to ensure high standards and quality.
  • Develop and maintain mass properties tools and methods to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the integration teams and DERs, support the development of compliance documentation and to ensure overall compliance with federal regulations and certification requirements.

Required

  • B.S. in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or another relevant discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience working in aircraft mass properties, weight and balance, and mass distribution.
  • In-depth understanding of regulatory requirements related to aircraft mass properties.
  • Experience performing mass properties analysis on aircraft structures, powerplant, and systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively within the company.
  • Ability to communicate issues and resolutions effectively at all levels within the company, including leadership team members.
  • Highly proactive attitude with the ability to manage multiple assignments and be responsive to internal and external customers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, organized planning, and documentation.
  • Advanced proficiency in mass properties analysis tools and software.
  • Demonstrated experience with aircraft certification processes, preferably with civil airplanes and/or rotorcraft.

Desired

  • M.S./Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (Aerospace / Aeronautics).
  • 10+ years of working experience in the relevant industry, including experience in leading mass properties teams.
  •  Expert knowledge of mass properties tools such as CATIA / Enovia and mass properties control systems.
  •  Excellent understanding of finite element analysis for mass distribution and dynamic analysis of structures.
  •  Experience with methods validation processes based on test data, including ground tests and flight tests.
  •  Hands-on experience working within aircraft certification programs and an excellent understanding of FAR regulations.
