Joby Overview

Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking an experienced Fabricator to join our subtractive prototyping team. This individual’s role is to make fixtures and jigs for testing, R&D and production using precision welding tables for fixturing while collaborating with engineers and other technicians through hands-on experience. You will be responsible for the entire process of job requests from review, to setup to welding the part. A willing attitude and team collaboration are very important for this position and go a long way when thinking through a variety of solutions to complete jobs on time due to the fast paced work environment. This position is hands-on experience, we aim to attract, retain, develop and motivate talent that possess the skills and leadership necessary to grow our team.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to shift between jobs when priorities change and communicating with co-workers.
  • Willing to juggle multiple projects often sidelining some projects to expedite others.
  • Operate MIG and TIG welding equipment.
  • Proficient with use of common shop measuring tools.
  • Operate drill presses, saws, grinders, and a variety of other manual tools and equipment.
  • Operate manual mills and lathes.
  • Operate CNC press brakes with manual controls.
  • Print reading and GD&T callouts relevant to fabrication and welding.
  • Collaborate with team members on how to best achieve end result and necessary tolerances.
  • Demonstrates ability to document and communicate well within the team environment.
  • Collaborate with engineers and designers, in person, by video call or phone, to provide solutions, feedback or alternative approaches to solve technical manufacturing problems with design and manufacturability in mind.
  • Use of video conferencing and phone calls through systems such as Zoom or Teams.
  • Use internal chat systems such as Slack.
  • Adhere to shop procedures and safety standards at all times.
  • Operate seated and walk behind Forklifts. Internal training provided.

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 3+ years experience in any relevant industry such as aerospace, motorsports, start-ups, or manufacturing shops. 
  • Minimum of 6+ years welding ferrous and non-ferrous materials, utilizing both MIG and TIG.
  • Experience welding in any position (1F through 4f, 1G through 6G).
  • Experience in welding a wide range of materials from aluminum, stainless and mild steels in a wide range of thicknesses from .060” up to 1”+.
  • Willingness to work 9 hour days plus extra overtime as needed.
  • Willingness to listen to instructions, attention to detail, work with minimal supervision.
  • Basic understanding of job workflows and ticketing systems that utilize Kanban, Sprint or other styles of ticketing workflows.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unaided.
  • Strong time-management skills including, how to prioritize multiple jobs, scheduling and best use of time.
  • Ability to plan out step by step order of operations including, time estimates, sourcing materials, fixturing and setups, and post process needs.
  • Understands basics of sheet metal bending and forming concepts.
  • Familiarity with 5S, or similar workplace organization methods.
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-growing environment with aggressive timelines.
  • Willingness to train other team members.

Desired

  • ISO 9001 experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of AWS D1.1 requirements.
  • Laser Welding for sheet metal.
  • Experience in welding Cryogenic components or welding exotic metals (Titanium, Chromoly, 321 Stainless Steel, 4140) a plus.
  • Experience in sheet metal bending and forming, CNC press brake knowledge a plus.
  • Forklift experience a plus.
  • Jira ticketing or other Kanban related systems experience.
  • Experience with Slack, Zoom, Teams and other relevant systems.
  • Experience with CAD (Fusion 360, Solidworks, Catia or other).

 

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $XX-$YY/hr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
