Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate, motivated and hands-on Powertrain Test Engineer to conduct performance & certification testing of electric powertrain specifically propulsion system comprising of electric motor, inverter and related systems and components.

Responsibilities

  • Drive test flow and related activities for the assigned equipment/ sub-assembly/ components per Joby Test flow processes and procedures
  • Develop requirements to enable Test Equipment Design team with the development of special purpose test bench/stand.
    • Aid in the commissioning of special test bench / stand in co-ordination with Test Equipment design team and Test Technicians to support meeting test goals .
  • Author and release test procedures for certification test campaigns.
  • Work closely with Test Enabling Software engineers to ensure successful implementation of data acquisition, test automation and data processing.
  • Work closely with Test Technician in test setups, execution of tests as needed on test equipment (Test benches, Thermal Chambers, Vibration Shakers etc al).
  • Co-ordinate with Reliability & Design Engineer to define appropriate test profiles for demonstrating reliability of systems and/or components.
  • Participate in discussions with cross functional team as a subject matter expert for test planning required to refine propulsion systems components like electric motor(s), inverter(s), pump, fan, radiator and more.
  • Work closely with Powertrain Integrated Product Team (IPT) to understand testing needs, milestones & deliverables and manage associated activities accordingly.
  • Participate in Failure and Root Cause Analysis (FRACAS) efforts for failures encountered in lab test and field returns.

Required

  • Bachelor in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics , Mechanical or equivalent + 5 years of experience or Masters + 3 years of experience or PhD
  • Experience in Propulsion system & component tests (EV or other applications)
  • Knowledge of Power Electronics testing will be a big plus.
  • Expertise LabView/ Diadem to aid in data collection
  • Expertise Python/ MATLAB for in data processing & analysis
  • Practical experience in using miscellaneous lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, DAQ systems, power analyzers, power supplies etc
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguous and fast paced environment
  • Be agile and adapt to evolving requirements and change in directions
  • Great communication & presentation skills

Desired

  • Prior experience in HV electric motor and/or inverter testing is preferred
  • Solid understanding of Electrical Engineering fundamentals
  • Knowledge of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) , Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) testing
    • Examples of EME Tests are Lightning Induced Transients, High-Intensity Radiated Fields, Voltage Spikes, Power Input, Magnetic Effects, Audio Frequency Conducted Susceptibility, Emission of Radio Frequency Energy, Electrostatic Discharge, and Induced Signal Susceptibility
  • Knowledge of DO-160 Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures
    • Examples of Mechanical Tests are Altitude, Thermal Cycling, Vibration, Operational Shock, Humidity, Salt Spray, Waterproofness, Fluid Susceptibility, Sand and Dust
  • Experience of regulatory and certification testing is a plus
  • Experience with Grafana for data visualization.

Additional Information

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $97,900 - $166,800/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
