Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

The Supplier Industrialization Engineering (SIE) team is responsible for critical component development and qualification activities at our global partners. As a SIE specializing in Metals and Mechanical Systems, you will be the technical bridge between Joby’s design teams and our supply base. Your mission is to ensure that suppliers of metallic components, continuous materials (extrusions, rolled stock), and complex mechanical assemblies can meet our rigorous aerospace standards for quality, scale, and performance. You will deep-dive into factory floors, optimize production lines, and drive the industrialization of the next generation of aviation.

Responsibilities

  • Industrialization & Launch: Lead the industrialization phase for complex metallic components and mechanical systems. Drive Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews to ensure products are optimized for high-rate production.
  • Process Deep-Dives: Conduct technical deep-dives into supplier processes, including CNC machining, casting, forging, heat treatment, extrusion, and specialized coating/finishing lines.
  • Continuous Materials: Manage and audit suppliers of continuous materials (e.g., aerospace-grade alloys, sheet metal, and wire), ensuring consistency in material properties and traceability.
  • Supplier Development: Develop, manage, and audit supplier manufacturing and assembly techniques. Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) at suppliers, ensuring scalability, cost efficiency, and uncompromising quality.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Facilitate technical alignment between Joby’s Design, Quality, and Manufacturing teams and the supplier's engineering staff.
  • Quality Management: Validate supplier corrective actions (CAPA) and lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for complex mechanical or material deviations.
  • Tooling & Equipment: Review and approve supplier tooling designs and manufacturing equipment specifications to ensure they meet Joby’s precision requirements.

Required

  • Education: B.S. in Mechanical, Metallurgical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent evidence of exceptional ability).
  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in industrial, manufacturing, or supplier quality engineering, specifically within high-stakes industries (Aerospace, Automotive, Medical Device).
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Deep understanding of metals manufacturing: machining, casting, forging, and secondary processes (anodizing, plating, etc.)
    • Experience with continuous material forms (extrusions, rolled products).
    • Expertise in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and advanced inspection methodologies (CMM, NDT).
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects and influence external partners.
  • Travel: Ability to travel up to 50% (domestic and international) to partner sites.

Desired

  • Experience with PPAP/APQP processes in an aerospace (AS9100) or automotive (IATF 16949) environment.
  • Familiarity with aerospace-grade aluminum, titanium, and specialized steel alloys.
  • Experience with mechanical system integration (actuators, linkages, or propulsion housings).
  • Six Sigma Green/Black Belt or Lean Manufacturing certification.
