Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking an in-house Senior Litigation Counsel to join our dynamic and growing People and Legal teams. Operating at the intersection of law and technology, you will engage directly with engineers and management to navigate a vast array of legal matters globally. In this role, you will lead the strategy for intellectual property disputes. This is an opportunity to provide high-level legal guidance within a fast-paced environment dedicated to revolutionizing aerial mobility.

Responsibilities

  • Lead IP Disputes: Provide strategic counsel and drive business-positive outcomes for adversarial matters, including patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret litigation and pre-litigation disputes.
  • Direct Outside Counsel: Manage all phases of the litigation lifecycle, including pre-suit investigations, discovery, motion practice, and trial, on a broad range of disputes to ensure outside execution remains aligned with company goals.
  • Support Broader Business: Partner with the legal team and management to advise on complex agreements, commercial disputes, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory investigations, and enforcement actions.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work with technical and leadership teams to provide support for various legal matters impacting the product and functional areas.
  • Strategic Decision Making: Exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations and take ownership of complex workstreams with limited oversight.

Required

  • A J.D. degree from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of experience specifically in IP litigation.
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-experts.
  • Demonstrated case management skills and the ability to identify the cause of unusual circumstances to devise solutions.
  • A strong sense of ownership and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-quality, and lean environment.
  • US Person Requirement: Pursuant to various local and state laws, and/or for US Export Control compliance, this role may require the candidate to be a "U.S. Person" (as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15).

Desired

  • Previous experience serving as a judicial clerk or direct trial experience.
  • Prior in-house legal experience within a technology or aerospace company.
  • Technical expertise or an undergraduate degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Experience partnering with cross-functional teams to provide expertise on complex legal matters.
Please still apply if you don’t meet all items in the desired qualifications section! If you’re excited about this role, but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may just be the right candidate for this or other roles.
