Overview

The Industrial Design team is responsible for defining the visual, tactile, and experiential DNA of our aircraft. As a Senior CMF Designer, you will be responsible for the strategic development and execution of color, material, and finish execution from early trend forecasting through to manufacturing and certification. As our Senior CMF Designer, you won't just select finishes, you will architect the visual and tactile future of flight. You will bridge the gap between aerospace engineering and aesthetics, pioneering the use of next-generation, sustainable materials to create an aircraft cabin that is lightweight, premium, durable and unfortgetable.

Responsibilities

  • CMF Strategy: Develop and implement Color, Materials, and Finishes (CMF) strategies for Joby aircraft and brand spaces that prioritize sustainability, weight reduction, and optimizing user experience
  • CMF Library: Build and maintain an internal CMF library that will serve as touchpoint for production aircraft, future aircraft and brand spaces
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with engineering teams, suppliers, supply chain and brand teams to execute the CMF Strategy
  • Future materials: Find and develop future materials both internally and with suppliers for improved weight, durability and customer experience
  • Competitive Vision: Maintain a deep understanding of the aviation landscape and automotive trends to keep Joby at the forefront
  • Brand awareness: Be a steward of the Joby brand and translate the brand across all products within the Joby product line

Required

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Industrial Design, Transportation Design, or a related field
  • Experience: 8+ years of professional CMF or design experience in Automotive, Aerospace, or Furniture design
  • Portfolio: A world-class portfolio demonstrating a strong sense of form, sophisticated surfacing, and a deep understanding of user experience
  • Materials Knowledge: Hands-on experience with advanced materials and coatings
  • Physical Prototyping: Experience driving the creation of high-fidelity physical models. Capable of rolling up your sleeves to prototype independently or leading external vendors to execute complex material finishes 
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: A "zero-ego" approach to feedback and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, iterative startup environment

Desired

  • Automotive and Aerospace Background: Experience in both Automotive and Aerospace Design is highly valued. Must have the ability to to have the design sensitivity found in car design combined with the real world experience of designing certified aircraft interiors
  • Certification Mindset: Familiarity with FAA or EASA aerospace regulations and best practices is a significant plus
  • Visionary Thinking: Ability to simplify complex technical requirements into elegant, intuitive, and iconic design solutions

Additional Information

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $136,500 - $187,700. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
